We kept reptiles.
We felt the gap.
So we closed it.
Most of us who keep reptiles, tend orchids, age wine, or store humidity-sensitive materials have made peace with a certain level of uncertainty. You check in when you can. You set a cheap thermometer and hope for the best.
The tools that exist are either too basic — no alerts, no logging, no remote access — or surprisingly technical or expensive, costing hundreds or thousands of dollars. Open-source platforms are genuinely powerful, but they require a level of DIY commitment that most people simply don't want. You shouldn't have to write firmware and configure a home server just to get a humidity reading on your phone from anywhere.
VARANUS started as a passion project born from exactly this frustration.
Two of our founders have kept reptiles for decades. We wanted something accurate, reliable, and genuinely easy to use — and when we couldn't find it, we built it.
Fast enough to matter
Most consumer sensors update every few minutes — or once an hour. Ours reads every 5 seconds, so you have an accurate picture of what's actually happening now, not what happened a while ago.
Always powered, always connected
USB-C powered and WiFi-connected means no dead batteries and no missed readings. Set it up once and leave it running.
No technical background required
If you can use a smartphone app, you can use VARANUS. No config files, no home server, no hobbyist forums. It connects to WiFi and works.
Built for people who care deeply
Whether you're a reptile breeder running 40 enclosures or someone with a single cherished orchid, VARANUS scales to your situation and treats your animals and collections with the same seriousness you do.
Wherever conditions matter,
we fit in.
We're launching with the communities we know best, and expanding as our sensor lineup grows.

We know you've been burned before.
Here's how we're doing things differently.
We're well aware that subscription fatigue is real, and that IoT hardware companies have a mixed track record. We've watched promising products get discontinued or companies go under when hardware sales slowed and there was no other revenue to keep the lights on.
Our subscription covers hosting, data retention, and infrastructure — not hardware margins. That means the service stays healthy independent of how many units we sell in a given month. It also allows us to sell better hardware without the inflated prices. We think that's a more honest way to build something meant to be depended on.
We'll also offer a free forever tier for basic functionality — current readings and limited history — so the hardware is always useful regardless of your subscription status.
And local mode means your devices keep working even without our cloud. View cached data, run automations, maintain control. Your setup doesn't depend entirely on us staying online.
Free forever tier
Current live readings and basic functionality at no cost. The hardware works out of the box, subscription or not.
Local mode — always on
View cached sensor data and control your devices locally even without internet access or our cloud services.
Subscription funds infrastructure
Our recurring revenue model is designed around operational sustainability — not chasing monthly device sales to cover the bills.
No lock-in surprises
We're transparent about what each tier includes. Upgrade for full history, alerts, and smart outlet control. Downgrade anytime without losing your hardware.
Your data is yours.
We keep it protected.
Your sensor data tells a quiet story — when you're home, when you're away, what you keep and how you care for it. We think that deserves real protection, not checkbox security.
We built our product with encryption and least-privilege access as foundational principles throughout the entire data lifecycle.

Built by people
who actually use it.
VARANUS LLC was founded in January 2026 — but the work started a decade earlier. Three people with deep roots in the hobby and the engineering background to build something worth depending on.
Ashley
Co-founder —Community & Product
Reptile keeper and foster carer, active in local cat rescue, and avid gardener. Brings the hands-on keeper's perspective to every product decision — if Ashley wouldn't use it, it doesn't ship.
Brian
Co-founder —Lead Software
M.S. Computer Science. Writing production code and building web applications since 2004. 3D printing enthusiast who knows firsthand what happens to filament in a poorly controlled environment. Leads all software design and development.
Casimir
Co-founder —Hardware & Engineering
B.S. Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. Writing production code since 2001. Reptile keeper for nearly 30 years — the original problem this product was built to solve. Leads hardware design and embedded systems engineering.
